Iran inaugurates five major petrochemical projects in Mahshahr

HOUSTON, July 1 -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami in late June commissioned five major petrochemical projects in Mahshahr, in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, reported OPEC News Agency.

A facility built by Khuzestan Petrochemical Co., completed at a cost of 600 billion rials, will produce engineering polymers, and the $142 million Bandar Imam methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) plant is designed to produce a maximum of 500,000 tonnes/year of MTBE.

Fajr Petrochemical Co.'s $310 million petrochemical project was the first utility project to be put into operation, OPECNA reported, and Fanavaran Petrochemical Co. put its $134 million petrochemical facility into operation ahead of schedule; it has been producing carbon monoxide and acetic acid since 2001.

Construction on a special petrochemicals export dock, built at a cost of $3.5 million, began in 2000. It has a 2.5 tonne/day capacity for loading and offloading liquid products.
