HOUSTON, July 20 -- Oman, Oman Oil Co. SAOC (OOC), and Dow Chemical Co. have formed a joint venture to design, build, and operate a petrochemical complex in the emirate.

The JV's interests will be Dow 50%, and Oman and OOC, 25% each. Construction of the petrochemical complex is expected to begin in 2005, the JV said. Dow was unable to comment on either the construction time or the capacity of the new facility, a Dow spokesman told OGJ.

The complex, which is to be sited in the Sohar Industrial Port Area, will comprise feedstock production facilities, a natural gas cracker, and three "world-scale polyethylene production units" based on state-of-the-art catalyst and process technology, Dow said.

The JV also will facilitate the development of downstream industries in Oman that will convert polyethylene to end-products in Oman.
