HOUSTON, June 24 -- Qatar Petroleum Co. and Exxon Mobil Corp. affiliate ExxonMobil Chemical Co. have signed a statement of intent to study the feasibility of constructing a world-scale, ethane-based cracker and ethylene derivatives complex at Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar.

The study will identify the technical and commercial aspects of developing a world-class petrochemical growth program in Qatar that, using ethane feedstock from new gas development projects in Qatar's North field, would supply products to Asia and Europe.

The companies are seeking to diversify the use of North field gas to expand Qatar's industrial base with gas-to-liquids projects and the supply of pipeline gas to domestic and regional customers.
