HOUSTON, Mar. 22 -- Woodside Energy Ltd. Friday decided to invest $1.48 billion (Aust.) to develop Enfield oil field in the Carnarvon basin off Western Australia (OGJ Online, June, 2000). Enfield lies on permit WA-271-P, 40 km northwest of Western Australia's North West Cape. Enfield has reserves of more than 125 million bbl of oil, and operator Woodside holds 100% of the permit.

"We now have all of our major environmental, government, and project approvals in place and are well positioned to bring the field into production by the fourth quarter of 2006," said Duncan Clegg, Woodside's oil business unit director.

The development, which would have an initial output of 100,000 b/d, would be Woodside's first production in the Exmouth region, Clegg said. It also would provide growth potential through the tie-back of nearby discoveries such as the Laverda field and future regional discoveries, he said.

Enfield was discovered in March 1999. Four further appraisal wells were drilled on the field through November 2002.

The development will include five production wells and six water injection wells for reservoir pressure support, with flowlines to a floating production, storage, and offloading vessel moored on the block in about 400 m of water. Natural gas not required for fuel will be reinjected into the reservoir via two gas injection wells.

Woodside will own and operate the FPSO, a new, double-hull Suezmax-type trading tanker with topsides of 8000 tonnes to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries Ltd. in South Korea (OGJ Online, July 1, 2003). The 270 m long vessel, of 150,000 dwt, will have a storage capacity of 900,000 bbl of oil, which it will offload to tankers having a capacity of about 550,000 bbl.

The Technip Subsea 7 Enfield JV will perform offshore installation work and supply subsea flowlines and dynamic risers. FMC Technologies Inc., Houston, will supply the subsea systems. The Fluor-AMEC JV in Perth is managing topsides' engineering and procurement services (OGJ Online, Dec. 22, 2003).
