Lakes Oil NL, Melbourne, plans to deepen the Wombat-1 exploration well in Gippsland basin onshore PEP 157 starting in mid-January to evaluate the Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group.

HOUSTON, Jan. 6 -- Lakes Oil NL, Melbourne, plans to deepen the Wombat-1 exploration well in Gippsland basin onshore PEP 157 starting in mid-January to evaluate the Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group.

The company is preparing a pad 2 km southwest to drill Wombat-2. The drill sites are south of the oil and gas processing and trans-shipment center at Longford.

Lakes plans to deepen Wombat-1 some 600-700 m from the current drilled depth of 1,767 m.

After drilling is complete, the company plans to conduct tests in Latrobe at 694-714 m and in Golden Beach/Kipper shale equivalent at 1,489-1,515 m, 1,532-63 m, and 1,571-91 m (OGJ, Nov. 13, 2000, p. 36).
