HOUSTON, Jan. 2 -- Emergency cleanup operations are continuing in south China's Pearl River mouth after a tanker carrying 1,989 tonnes of fuel oil collided with a container ship Monday near Lingding Island. The collision damaged two compartments in the tanker, spilling 300 tonnes of oil into the sea.

The tanker was towed and grounded 800 m away from the main water traffic route, and lightering efforts commenced to transfer the remaining oil to two other vessels.

The Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration is investigating the incident.
