HOUSTON, Oct. 15 -- The MedGaz consortium has awarded Intec Engineering (UK) Ltd., Woking, UK, a contract to perform front-end engineering design for the
MedGaz pipeline project.

Ultradeepwater pipelines will be designed to deliver as much as 16 billion cu m/year of Algerian natural gas under the Mediterranean Sea to Spain for Spanish and other European markets. Initial deliveries in third quarter 2006 will be 7 billion cu m/year.

MedGaz involves the construction of 200 km of dual 24-in. high-pressure subsea pipelines from Beni Saf, Algeria, to a landfall at Playa del Charco, near Almeria, Spain. The lines will include shore approaches and short onshore pipeline sections connecting onshore terminals at each end of the mainlines, which will be installed in water as deep as 2,160 m.

Intec will have 6 months to complete the pipeline design and prepare bid packages for engineering, procurement, installation, and commission of the lines.
The front-end engineering is scheduled for completion in February 2004.

Currently, survey vessels are gathering geo-technical information along the pipeline route to aid in determining route selection, soil characterization, and ensure protection of environmentally sensitive areas.

MedGaz partners include Algeria's national oil company Sonatrach; Spanish companies Compañía Española de Petróleos SA, Endesa SA, and electric power company Iberdrola SA; and BP Group LLC, Total SA, and Gas de France.
