HOUSTON, Sept. 29 -- Norsk Hydro AS, operator of production license (PL) 036 off Norway, has reported an oil discovery on the Klegg well (25/4-9S) about 208 km from Stavanger in 120 m of water. It is located about 11 km north of the Heimdal platform.

The Deepsea Delta rig drilled the Klegg well to 2,268 m TD into the Heimdal formation, ending in tertiary rock. It encountered good quality oil in a gross oil column of 65 m in the Heimdal link, which was the main target, Norsk Hydro said.

Norsk Hydro is now evaluating the discovery, which is expected to contain 3-5 million standard cu m of oil. Extensive down-hole samples, core, and wireline logs were collected and currently are being analyzed.

The well is being permanently plugged, and the drilling rig will leave the area during the next few days, Norsk Hydro said.

Norsk Hydro holds a 28.5% interest in Klegg, and Marathon Oil Corp. subsidiary, Marathon Petroleum Norge A/S holds a 46.9% working interest. The remaining interests are held by Total E&P Norge AS 24.2%, and AS Ugland Rederi 0.3%.
