HOUSTON, Aug. 27 -- Sasol Petroleum International (Pty.) Ltd., Johannesburg—under a production sharing agreement with Mozambique's Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME)—is undertaking an aggressive 2003 drilling campaign in the area of Temane and Pande natural gas fields, in Mozambique. The areas, both onshore, are northwest of Vilankulo, in Inhambane Province about 700 km north of Maputo.
Five of the eight development and exploration wells drilled to date are in partnership with Companhia Moçambicana de Hidrocarbonetos, an affiliate of Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos de Moçambique.
Inhassoro-2 well, southeast of Temane field, was the first exploration well drilled in Mozambique in nearly 3 years, MIREME said, and the seventh since 1972.
Under the 2003 program, Sasol may drill as many as 19 wells, including 11 exploration and appraisal wells. It will complete development drilling in Temane field and carry out exploration and appraisal drilling on prospects in both field areas, which may contain additional gas reserves. Drilling will be to 1300-1900 m TD, with all wells targeting Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, in the Lower Grudja formation.
Exploration results so far have been encouraging, MIREME said, and useful information has been obtained for the development of the fields.
