Petrokemya awards EPC contract to Samsung for new butene-1 plant in Saudi Arabia

Arabian Petrochemical Co. (Petrokemya), a wholly owned affiliate of Saudi Basic Industries Corp (Sabic), Riyadh, has awarded a lump-sum, turnkey contract to the South Korean company, Samsung Engineering Co. for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a third butene-1 plant at its petrochemical complex in Al-Jubail Industrial City on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia.

HOUSTON, July 23 -- Arabian Petrochemical Co. (Petrokemya), a wholly owned affiliate of Saudi Basic Industries Corp (Sabic), Riyadh, has awarded a lump-sum, turnkey contract to the South Korean company, Samsung Engineering Co. for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a third butene-1 plant at its petrochemical complex in Al-Jubail Industrial City on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia.

The 130,000 tonnes/year plant is slated for completion by first quarter 2005. The two existing butene-1 plants at Petrokemya already produce 100,000 tonnes/year. After the expansion, the affiliate will have a total butene-1 capacity of 230,000 tonnes/year.

Sabic Vice-Chairman and CEO, Mohamed Al-Mady said: "With this additional plant, we are moving closer to our production target of 48 million tonnes/year by 2010."

Petrokemya and Sabic Engineering & Project Management jointly performed preengineering leading to the contract.

The Saudi Arabian Government owns 70% of Sabic, and the remaining 30% is held by private investors in Saudi Arabia and other countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
