HOUSTON, July 18 -- Joint venture partners ExxonMobil Corp. and ChevronTexaco Corp. confirmed a test on the Jansz-3 natural gas well in the northern Carnarvon basin off Western Australia flowed at a rate of more than 72 MMcfd.

The well is an appraisal well to the 2000 Jansz discovery (OGJ, Feb. 12, 2001, p. 43). Preliminary results indicate that Jansz field, in permit WA-18-R and its extension into the adjacent WA-267-P Block, could contain reserves approaching 20 tcf.

Appraisal drilling on the field in permit WA-18-R indicated a field size in excess of 760 sq miles with an interpreted 1,300 ft gross gas column.

ExxonMobil's unit, Mobil Exploration & Producing Australia Pty. Ltd., said the Jansz-3 well was drilled in water depths of 4,355 ft to a total depth of 9,425 ft below sea level. The field is believed to represent 40% of the undeveloped, discovered gas resources in the deepwater Carnarvon basin.

Operator ExxonMobil holds a 50% equity interest in the WA-18-R permit, which contains the Jansz-3. ChevronTexaco holds the remaining 50% equity interest in that permit. The partners are conducting a joint study to assess development options.

ExxonMobil also holds a 25% equity interest in the adjacent WA-267-P block. ChevronTexaco operates and holds 50% equity in the adjacent WA-267-P block. Other partners are Royal Dutch Shell Group 12.5%, and BP PLC 12.5%.
