Sunoco Chemical plant explosion and fire hospitalizes one

An explosion and fire shook the Sunoco Chemical plant in La Porte, Tex., at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

HOUSTON, June 19 -- An explosion and fire shook the Sunoco Chemical plant in La Porte, Tex., at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, injuring a worker who was flown to a Houston hospital, said a spokeswoman with Sunoco Oil Co., Philadelphia.

The blaze was quickly extinguished, she said. Cause of the fire was under investigation, she said, adding no other details were immediately available.

Air monitoring detected no ill effects to the area outisde the plant, she said.

Sunoco Chemicals, a division of Sun Oil, produces polyproplyene pellets.
