HOUSTON, Apr. 15 -- Charles L Blackburn has been elected chairman of Forth Worth, Tex.-based independent Range Resources Corp. He succeeds Thomas J. Edelman, who will step down from his position May 21.

Previously, Blackburn served as an executive vice-president of Shell Oil Co. and as chairman and CEO of Maxus Energy Corp. He has worked in the oil and gas industry for more than 40 years. John H. Pinkerton will continue to serve as the company's president and CEO.

Edelman and fellow director Alexander P. Lynch will not seek reelection to Range's board, the company explained, as the result of certain provisions of the Clayton Act, a federal antitrust statute enacted in 1914, which prohibits both men from serving as directors or officers of two independent oil companies.

Separately, Range reported the resignation of Terry W. Carter as its executive vice-president, exploration and production. Carter resigned for personal reasons and a search to replace him will begin shortly, the company said.
