HOUSTON, Mar. 10 -- Snøhvit project operator Statoil ASA has awarded a 800-850 million kroner contract to AFS-Pihl Group for civil works, foundations, and construction of various process buildings associated with the Snøhvit LNG processing plant. AFS-Pihl Group is a joint venture of Norway's AF Spesialprosjekt AS and E. Pihl & Son AS of Denmark.

Construction is scheduled to begin in May and be completed in November 2005. Work will be carried out at the plant site on Melkøya Island outside Hammerfest in northern Norway.

Except for installation of plant modules, which are to be awarded in the autumn, this job represents the last major contract let for the facility, reported Morten Vinje, Snøhvit area manager.

The AFS-Pihl Group is already responsible for blasting and leveling the industrial site on Melkøya and for building the export jetty.

Snøhvit gas and condensate field in the Barents Sea is due to come on stream in 2006. The Snøhvit discovery was made in 1984, in middle and lower Jurassic formations on Blocks 7120/6, 7121/4, and 7121/5.

Licensees for the 45 billion kroner Snøhvit LNG export project are TotalFinaElf SA, Gaz de France, Norsk Hydro AS, Amerada Hess Corp., Hamburg-based RWE-DEA AG, Svenska Petroleum Exploration AB, and Petoro AS.
