HOUSTON, Mar. 18 -- The Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington, DC, the Institut Francais de Pétrole, Paris, and Simmons & Co. International, Houston, this month launched an 18-month study of production capacities of the largest oil fields in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and the UAE.

Researchers intend to analyze the Persian Gulf countries' oil reserves and their ability to meet rising global energy demand. Information on the countries' production capacity, condition of the fields, and infrastructure is limited, they said.

"We cannot afford to be wrong about the ability of key exporters to meet growing world oil demand or to make up for disruptions in supply. Too much is at stake politically and financially," said Robert Ebel, director of the CSIS Energy Program.
