NICOSIA, Feb. 3 -- Oman awarded to South Korea's SK Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. (SKEC) a $99.5 million contract to maintain and operate the planned 75,000 b/d Sohar refinery.

Oman earlier awarded an $879 million contract of construction of the refinery 250 km northwest of Muscat to a Japanese consortium of JGC Corp. and Chiyoda Corp., with completion scheduled for mid-2006 (OGJ Online, Jan. 7, 2003).

The new contract is SKEC's second with Oman. In June 2002, it won the $32 million diesel hydrodesulfurization (DHDS) construction project from the Oman Refinery Co. (ORC). Under terms of that contract, SKEC will install the DHDS and other related facilities in ORC's oil refinery complex at Mina al-Fahal in Muscat.
