HOUSTON, Feb. 4 -- BP PLC, operator of newly formed BTC Pipeline Co., has selected Northern Power Systems, Waitsfield, Vt., to provide power systems for the 690 km Azerbaijan-Georgia portion of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline.

Under terms of the multimillion dollar contract, Northern Power will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and testing of 37 integrated power systems. Northern anticipates that the entire project will take about 1 year for all systems to be shipped.

Northern will supply 20 single-diesel genset (generator) powered systems that will provide uninterruptible power for critical loads such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), fiber optic telecommunication, cathodic protection, and mainline block valve actuation systems.

Northern also will provide 17 dual-genset systems—for deployment along portions of the pipeline that do not have access to utility grid power.

Shareholders in BTC Pipeline Co. are BP, State Oil Co. of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), Unocal Corp., Statoil ASA, Turkish Oil Corp. (Turkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortakligi or TPAO), TotalFinaElf SA, ENI SPA, Japan's Itochu Corp. and Inpex Corp., ConocoPhilips, and the Delta Hess Alliance.

The Bechtel Group and John Brown Hydrocarbons were also involved in Northern's selection for this project. The contract will be administered out of Bechtel's offices in London.
