HOUSTON, Jan. 13 -- An independent surface exploration contractor is seeking Permian Basin operators to participate in a field evaluation of 15 geochemical exploration methods.

Gerry G. Calhoun, partner of New Paradigm Exploration Inc. in Midland, Tex., proposes to test the techniques on 30 wildcats to be drilled in West Texas and New Mexico and is seeking funds from the US Department of Energy.

Calhoun represents a group of geochem contractors attempting to respond to a DOE solicitation. Part of the submittal is a statement of interest by oil operators in drilling one or more of the 30 wildcats.

"A number of statistical standards can be applied to such a large body of data, resulting in a valid assessment of the techniques side by side. The work proposed could give the oil industry a new, dependable set of eyes to look at the mature basins of the US," he said.

Calhoun, at (615) 383-0570, hopes to hear from operators by Feb. 1, 2003.

Calhoun spearheaded the similar GERT project in the basin in the late 1980s and reported the results (OGJ, May 13, 1991, p. 62).
