LIMA, Oct. 11 -- Techint SA, the constructor for the pipeline to be built on the eastern slopes of the Andes as part of the $1.3 billion Camisea natural gas project in Peru, is negotiating with union leaders representing a reported 2,500 local workers who walked out Monday, demanding better working conditions.
The strike committee is in Quiteri, 140 km north of Quillabamba, Cusco.
Details on the strikers' demands were not immediately available. The company, however, said it expected to resolve the strike quickly.
Last week a group of men attacked a Techint mobile pipeline camp and stole vital parts from equipment. The company said, however, that they were thieves, not terrorists.
The pipeline will transport natural gas from the Camisea fields 697 km over the Andes to the coast, terminating at the city gate in Lurin 60 km south of Lima.
In addition, a liquids pipeline will extend 575 km to a fractionation plant at either Pampa Claritas in Cañete or to a site near the port of Pisco on the south coast.
