HOUSTON, Oct. 29 -- The Yemeni affiliate of Vintage Petroleum Inc., Tulsa, reported the Osaylan exploration well on the Alif/Lam prospect on Block S-1 encountered hydrocarbons but preliminary results were disappointing. The well was spudded earlier this month (OGJ, Oct. 14, 2002, p. 8).

Block S1 is south of Halewah oil field. The well, drilled to 1,902 m, was temporarily abandoned pending evaluation of core analysis, fluid analysis, and the interpretation of other data. A completion attempt could be made if the analyses warrant it, Vintage said.

The drilling rig is being moved to spud the An Nagyah 2 exploratory well. It's a 3D seismic defined structure with potential in both the Alif and Lam formations.

The An Nagyah 2 will offset a well previously drilled by Royal Dutch/Shell Group. The Shell well indicated pay.

Vintage operates the block with 75% interest, and Trans-Globe Energy Corp., Calgary, has 25% (OGJ, Mar. 13, 2000, p. 67).
