HOUSTON, Oct. 28 -- Nippon Oil Corp., Japan's largest oil distributor, is now operating the new 300,000 dwt Tateyama very large crude carrier in regular service. The vessel, operating under the Panama flag, was delivered earlier this year to owner Aquamarine Shipholding Maritime SA, a Panamanian subsidiary of NYK Line (OGJ, June 3, 2002).
The oil tanker, built at NKK Corp.'s Tsu Works, is the first vessel NKK developed in the Malacca-max class. It is 333 m long, 60 m wide, and 29.6 m deep, with a 20.84 m draft, the maximum permissible dimension to sail through the Strait of Malacca.
A DU Sulzer 7RTA84T engine powers Tateyama, enabling a service speed of 16.20 knots making it one of the fastest tankers in this class.
