HOUSTON, Sept. 17 -- Philadelphia-based Sunoco Inc. revealed plans that it will build and operate a sulfur recovery plant at the refining company's 175,000 b/d refinery at Marcus Hook, Pa. Currently acid gases are being treated at a neighboring plant operated by General Chemical Corp., Sunoco said, and when that plant is unable to handle the gases, Sunoco must flare them.
Earlier this year, Sunoco entered into an agreement with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to take steps to reduce flaring following "a series of flaring incidents."
Sunoco, which already operates a sulfur plant at its Philadelphia refinery, said, "Flaring of gases is an essential and reliable part of petroleum refining operations and the sulfur plant design will include the necessary safeguards for controlled flaring in the future." Black & Veatch Corp. has been selected to perform the front-end engineering and design work for the plant, Sunoco stated, adding, "This project is on a fast track."
