Shanghai Cabot Chemical to expand carbon black plant

Shanghai Cabot Chemical Co. Ltd. plans to expand its carbon black production facility in Shanghai, China, to increase carbon black production by more than 50,000 tonnes/year.

HOUSTON, Sept. 17 -- Shanghai Cabot Chemical Co. Ltd. plans to expand its carbon black production facility in Shanghai, China, to increase carbon black production by more than 50,000 tonnes/year.

The $25 million plant expansion will use advanced technology developed by Cabot Corp., Boston, and is expected to be fully operational by early 2004.

Formed in 1988, Shanghai Cabot Chemical is a 70:30 respective joint venture of Cabot and Shanghai Coking Chemical Co. The JV began carbon black production in 1992.

Carbon black is a reinforcing material used in the tire and rubber industries. Currently, China ranks third in the world in its consumption of carbon black, behind the US and Japan.
