HOUSTON, July 8 -- Bow Valley Energy Ltd., Calgary, has spudded the West Compton-1 well, which is the first to examine prospects updip from the giant Wytch Farm field in the Wessex basin, said partner Sterling Resources Ltd., Calgary.

In Petroleum Exploration and Development License 048, West Compton-1 is a tilted fault block at the western end of Wessex high, 35 km from Wytch Farm. The well will be directionally drilled in Sherwood sandstone.

The target depth is 1,800 m (1,060 m subsea), Sterling said. The well, spudded July 3, was expected to reach its target in 30-40 days. Sterling has 22.5% interest in the project.
