HOUSTON, Jan. 17 -- Basell Polyolefine GMBH awarded Montedison Group unit Tecnimont a 140 million euro contract for a 320,000 tonne/year high-density polyethylene plant to be built at Wesseling, Germany.

Tecnimont will supply engineering, materials, and equipment for the plant, as well as construction and construction management.

The plant project, announced in June, will produce HDPE pipe grades in black, blue, and orange-yellow, using Basell-owned technology.

The plant, scheduled for start-up early in 2004, will be Basell's largest capacity facility based on the Hostalen technology.

The company expects the western Europe pipe market to grow at 5.5%/year through 2009.

Basell, a joint venture of BASF AG and the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, says it is the world's largest producer of polypropylene and a leader in polyethylene and advanced polyolefin products.
