LONDON, Jan. 4 -- Carpathian Resources Ltd., an Australian company, said Friday that it found oil at its Postoma 1 wildcat in the Vienna basin of the Czech Republic.

The well intersected its primary target, the Lab sand, at 1,450-1,461 m. There were strong hydrocarbon indications, and the sand was thicker than expected. After perforation, the hole flowed 16.8 cu m/d.

Carpathian said preparations are under way for a long-term production test and permanent production facilities.

Postoma 1 was the company's first hole drilled on the Breclav license. It reached 1,652 m TD on Nov. 21.

Carpathian is the operator with 17.65%. Geocan Energy AS, Unigeo AS, and Ceska Naftarska Spolecnost AS each hold 27.45%.

The 28.5 sq km Breclav license is surrounded by producing fields. To the east is Hrusky, the largest oil and gas field in the Czech portion of the Vienna basin, which has produced 11 million bbl of oil and 64 bcf of gas. To the west is Lednice gas field, which has produced 2.1 bcf of gas.

Separately, the Czech government said Conoco Inc. will pay $168.3 million for Agrofert AS, which recently won a tender bid for refiner Unipetrol AS.

The government last month agreed to sell its 63% stake in Unipetrol to Agrofert, a Czech-Swiss chemical company. Conoco, which backed the bid, will now take over Ceska Rafinerska AS, the largest refiner in the country, and Benzina AS, a service station network.

Agrofert will keep the rest of Unipetrol, including petrochemical makers Chemopetrol AS and Kaucuk AS.

Unipetrol also owns chemical maker AliaChem AS and Paramo AS, a producer of heating oils and lubricants.
