HOUSTON, Dec. 7 -- International Fuel Technology Inc., St. Louis, plans to ask the US Department of Energy to designate its proprietary diesel fuel blend as an alternative fuel under the 1992 Energy Policy Act.
Congress passed the law with the goal of replacing 30% of the motor fuels used in the US with alternative fuels.
The company said most of its diesel fuel blend is synthetic diesel from natural gas condensate, which is then mixed with EPA No. 2 diesel and IFT's patented fuel additive.
IFT said testing at Southwest Research Institute found the fuel, when compared to No. 2 diesel fuel, reduced carbon monoxide by 20%, nitrogen oxides 10%, particulate matter 10%, and carbon dioxide 7%, while achieving a fuel economy increase of 6%. It said emissions and fuel economy comparisons with premium diesel and California-certified diesel yielded similar results.
IFT said it will ask the California Air Resources Board to certify the fuel meets standards for low sulfur and aromatic content.
