HOUSTON, Dec. 7 -- Canadian Superior Energy Inc., Calgary, said its recently acquired Mayflower block off eastern Canada has structures analogous to some fields that have reserves of up to 500 million bbl of oil or 5 tcf of natural gas.
At the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board lease sale held last month, Canadian Superior offered a work expenditure pledge of $41.3 million (Can.) for License 2406, which it has dubbed Mayflower (OGJ Online, Nov. 2, 2001). It also pledged $15.5 million for License 2409, which it has dubbed Mariner.
It said the Mayflower area is 285 miles straight east of Boston, Mass., near "vibrant" Northeast US energy markets. Canadian Superior said seismic data on the Mayflower prospect has identified three large deepwater turbidite structures that are analogous to some in the Gulf of Mexico, off Angola, and off Brazil.
Seismic on the Mariner prospect has identified a large Cretaceous structure in shallow water near existing Sable Island infrastructure. The company said similar structures nearby are producing 500 MMcfd of gas to Nova Scotia and New England through the Maritimes & Northeast pipeline.
Canadian Superior plans to drill a well on its Marquis prospect, also off eastern Canada, next year (OGJ, Dec. 3, 2001, p. 47). The Abenaki Reef prospect, 160 km off Nova Scotia, is on trend with PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd.'s Deep Panuke discovery off Nova Scotia, said the company, noting Deep Panuke is expected to produce 400 MMcfd.
