HOUSTON, Nov. 19 -- Lapindo Brantas Inc. has a gas discovery in the Brantas production-sharing contract in East Java, said PSC partner Novus Petroleum Ltd., Sydney.

Tanggulangin-1 is the first of three wells in the partners' exploration program. The three all are drilling the same play system as the nearby Wunut field.

The companies estimate 33 m of gas pay from Tanggulangin-1's logs in three shallow reservoir zones behind 9 5/8-in. casing. The well also found additional reservoir zones with strong gas shows in the open-hole section below the 9 5/8-in. casing.

Those lower zones were not logged because the well found a strong gas influx at 916 m. Engineering difficulties caused the well to be plugged back. The section below the casing was being abandoned in preparation for well suspension.

Novus said the well found three reservoirs. Two reservoirs that were water wet in the adjacent Wunut gas field are gas-bearing in Tanggulangin-1.

The rig will move to spud a well on the Carat prospect 5 km south of Wunut. The third well will be Grati-1; it will target Pliocene reservoirs in a fault-closed structure believed to reach 850 m TD.

Lapindo owns 50% of the PSC and Novus the remaining 50%.
