HOUSTON, Aug. 17 -- Chevron Corp. and partners Friday said oil production has begun from the North Nemba platform on Block 0 off Angola.

North Nemba is expected to peak at 50,000 b/d of oil in the second quarter of 2002 and will average 40,000 b/d for the year.

Peter Robertson, president of Chevron Overseas Petroleum Inc., said, "North Nemba production will boost Chevron-operated crude volumes produced from Block 0 and deepwater Block 14 to an average of more than 500,000 b/d this year."

Nemba field, in Area B of Block 0 about 37 miles west of the Malongo terminal, is being developed through two production platforms, South and North Nemba. Both have gas compression facilities and secondary recovery through rich gas injection. South Nemba, installed in December 1997, began production in June 1998.

The North Nemba drilling program includes nine oil-condensate wells and three gas injection wells. Before crude production was begun, a gas injection well was drilled in order to minimize gas flaring during commissioning and start-up.

North Nemba crude is moved via pipeline to the Malongo terminal for export.
