HOUSTON, Aug. 3 -- Cairn Energy PLC has made a third hydrocarbon discovery on Block KG-DWN-98/2 off Andhra Pradesh, Eastern India, with well DWN-P-1.

The Prospect P well was drilled 12.5 km northwest of the R gas discovery, which flowed 80 MMscfd on a 1-in. choke from two zones at a combined stabilized rate, constrained by equipment limitations (OGJ Online, June 29, 2001).

No details were released for the March N discovery on the block, though Cairn said it found a cluster of potentially gas-bearing units.

DWN-P-1 reached 2,585 m TD and found two hydrocarbon-bearing units, said Cairn. The first was a gas cap with a thin oil leg; the deeper second unit was a thin gas column with an estimated 75-m oil column.

Tests are planned for the discovery.

"The reservoirs are predominantly thinly laminated sands," the company said.

Cairn also said it has terminated attempts to drill a well on prospect 6 on Block KG-OS off India after encountering a shallow gas reservoir at 600 m and water flows from sands just below the seabed.

The company plans to drill the prospect again next year with a special top hole casing design and a more specialized drilling rig.

Cairn owns 100% of KG-DWN-98/2. It owns a 50% interest in KG-OS/6, and Videocon Petroleum Ltd. owns the balance.
