Spinnaker finds gas in Mustang Island area off Texas

Spinnaker Exploration Co., Houston, has a gas-condensate discovery at its Stirrup prospect on Mustang Island Block 861 in Texas state waters in the Gulf of Mexico. After stimulation, one sand tested at 21.1 MMcfd of gas and 130 b/d of condensate at flowing pressure of more than 11,000 psi.

HOUSTON, July 26 -- Spinnaker Exploration Co., Houston, has a gas-condensate discovery at its Stirrup prospect on Mustang Island Block 861 in Texas state waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mustang Island 861 No. 1, 25 miles south of Corpus Christi in 54 ft of water, was drilled to 17,123 ft.

After stimulation, one sand tested at 21.1 MMcfd of gas and 130 b/d of condensate at flowing pressure of more than 11,000 psi. Spinnaker said gas quality was "excellent."

Two other sands were tested and found pay, but esults were not disclosed.

The well tested Middle Frio sands. Spinnaker said it established the geologically oldest production on the continental shelf west of the Mississippi River.

It said the well is on a large faulted anticline and additional drilling will be required to delineate the discovery.

The well has been shut in pending design and fabrication of a production platform, related facilities, and a flow line.

Spinnaker operates the prospect with 42% working interest and a 34% net revenue interest. Dominion Exploration & Production Inc., Richmond, Va., owns 33% working interest, and Pioneer Natural Resources Co., Irving, Tex., has the other 25%.
