HOUSTON, July 10 -- The Qatar Petroleum Co. (QP) and Sasol Synfuels International Co. have awarded Foster Wheeler Corp. the $30 million contract for the front-end engineering design of a gas-to-liquids plant to built at Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar.

The project was announced earlier this year (OGJ Online, Mar. 13, 2001). QP and Sasol signed the joint venture agreement for the plant July 2.

The $800 million GTL project will start up in 2005. It will convert 330 MMscfd of natural gas from Qatar's North field into 34,000 b/d of liquids -- 24,000 b/d of fuel, 9,000 b/d of naphtha, and 1,000 b/d of liquefied petroleum gas.

The FEED stage of the project will last 9 months. It will be followed by a 5-month bidding phase for the engineering, procurement, and construction contract.

QP has 51% and Sasol 49% of the project. They now will seek financing for the plant.
