North West Shelf venture awards civil engineering contract for Burrup plant

The partners in the North West Shelf Venture of Australia have awarded Australian construction and engineering company Thiess Pty. Ltd. a $20 million (Aus.) civil engineering contract for the fourth liquefied natural gas train at the LNG plant on the Burrup Peninsula.

HOUSTON, July 23 -- The partners in the North West Shelf Venture of Australia have awarded Australian construction and engineering company Thiess Pty. Ltd. a $20 million (Aus.) civil engineering contract for the fourth liquefied natural gas train at the LNG plant on the Burrup Peninsula.

Previously, the venture had awarded $485 million (Aus.) in contracts for the $1.6 billion, 4.2-million-tonne/year train, said Woodside Energy Ltd., operator of the North West Venture (OGJ Online, June 1, 2001).

The civil engineering contract will involve construction of reinforced concrete foundations and supply of underground electrical services for the fourth train.

Woodside said more than 10,000 cu m of concrete will be required to provide footings for the train.

Work on the project will begin in August and finish next May.

First LNG production from the new train is expected in mid-2004.

The six equal participants in the North West Shelf Venture are: Woodside Energy Ltd., BHP Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty. Ltd., BP Developments Australia Pty. Ltd., Chevron Australia Pty. Ltd., Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty. Ltd., and Shell Development (Australia) Pty. Ltd.
