CNOOC Ltd., foreign companies strike oil off China

CNOOC Ltd. and its foreign partners have hit oil in several wells drilled so far this year. By the end of May, CNOOC had participated in 13 exploration wells, including nine drilled by foreign companies.

HOUSTON, June 12 -- CNOOC Ltd. and its foreign partners have hit oil in several wells drilled so far this year.

By the end of May, CNOOC had participated in 13 exploration wells, including nine drilled by foreign companies. Seven of the 13 are appraisal wells and six are wildcats.

As part of the CACT consortium, CNOOC and partners drilled HZ/19-2-1 in 102 m of water in the Pearl River Mouth basin to 3,875 m. It found several hydrocarbon zones and flowed 4,700 b/d of 46°-gravity oil.

Eni SPA, CNOOC Ltd., Chevron Corp., and Texaco Inc. are partners in CACT, which produces 100,000 b/d of oil.

Devon Energy Corp.'s HZ 9-2, in 111 m of water in the Pearl River basin, flowed 1,602 b/d of 48°-gravity oil from a drillstem test at 3,578-98 m.

CNOOC drilled appraisal WZ 12-1-6, in the Yulin 35 Block in the Beibu Gulf of the South China Sea, to 3,130 m. It found 24 m of net pay and tested 5,345 b/d of 37-39°-gravity oil. The well is in 33 m of water.

Phillips Petroleum Co. completed the PL 25-6-2 appraisal in Block 11/05 in the Bohai Sea. It found 108 m of net pay.

Kerr-McGee Corp. drilled an appraisal in Block 05/36 of the Bohai Bay. The CFD 12-1-3 found multiple oil pay sands. It also drilled three successful appraisal wells in Block 04/36 of Bohai Bay.

CNOOC plans to shoot 10,000 km of 2D and 1,200 sq km of 3D seismic in 2001. Foreign operators plan to shoot 1,800 km of 2D and 2,000 sq km of 3D.
