PARIS, May 14 -- TotalFinaElf SA Monday signed a codevelopment agreement with Delphi Automotive Systems Corp., Troy, Mich., to research and test fuel cell technologies and fuel reformation.
A mobile electronics and transportation systems technology specialist, Delphi said the partnership will study the effect of fuel composition and additives on the performance of fuel-reforming devices.
Delphi's Energy and Chassis Systems Pres. Guy Hachey said, "Our expertise in solid oxide fuel cell technology and TotalFinaElf's expertise in the refining and marketing of fuel products and additives will lead to discovery and development that will benefit both organizations."
John Botti, Delphi's European director of engineering, said, fuel cells hold potential for numerous applications. "Solid fuel oxide cells used as a vehicle's auxiliary power unit could generate electrical energy for a wide range of potential vehicle systems," including air conditioners and water pumps, he said.
Initial studies will focus on the use fuel cells for gasoline, then diesel, domestic heating and liquid petroleum gas. Research and testing will take place at Delphi's Rochester, NY, technical center and at TotalFinaElf's European facilities.
