HOUSTON, May 24 -- Canadian and international energy officials will meet in Halifax June 14 at a forum to discuss the Nova Scotia government's process of developing an energy strategy.

Discussion will include opportunities for Nova Scotia's sales of oil, gas, and electricity to the northeastern US. Meanwhile, Nova Scotia is forecast to quadruple gas production to 2 bcfd by 2015.

Another topic of discussion will be environmental concerns. The province is revising its energy strategy to take these changes into account, organizers said.

Petroleum Directorate Minister Gordon Balser said, "This public process allows us to gather advice and listen to the views of Nova Scotians and others, who are directly affected by energy developments in our province."

During the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston earlier this month, Premier John Hamm predicted, "Nova Scotia will be a player in the North American energy strategy."

About 7 tcf of gas has been found off Nova Scotia. Hamm said that number will grow because more than $1 billion in exploration is set for the next 5 years. Estimates of Nova Scotia's offshore potential range are 40-100 tcf (OGJ, May 7, 2001, p. 24).
