HOUSTON, May 7 -- Qatar awarded J. Ray McDermott Middle East an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contract for an offshore platform and pipelines for Maydan Mahzam fields, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' news agency reported Monday.

J. Ray McDermott is a subsidiary of McDermott International Inc., New Orleans.

J. Ray McDermott's Jebel Ali operations will handle project management, design engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, hook-up, and mechanical completion of the offshore facilities.

Work on the wellhead jacket and deck is expected to begin at the yard in mid-August, while platform installation work is slated for December 2001 and January 2002.

A second mobilization is slated following drilling in mid-2002 to ensure mechanical completion by the end of August.

The pipelines will involve a 6-in. bulk flow line and an 8-in. lift pipeline between existing facilities and three spur lines to subsea tie-ins.

This is the second contract in about a month that McDermott has won for fields off Qatar.

Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Co. II (RasGas II) and a joint venture signed an engineering, procurement, and construction contract to build an LNG train and related offshore facilities at the RasGas plant (OGJ Online, Apr. 2, 2002).
