HOUSTON, Apr. 26 -- Southern Natural Gas Co., a subsidiary of El Paso Corp., has applied to the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to build a $240 million gas pipeline system in Georgia and Florida.
Using the proposed 166-mile, 310 MMcfd pipeline, Southern Natural subsidiary Cypress Natural Gas Co. will be able to transport gas from El Paso's liquefied natural gas receiving terminal at Savannah, Ga., to interconnections with Southern Natural's South Georgia Lateral; Florida Gas Transmission Co. (a jointly owned subsidiary of El Paso and Enron Corp.); Atlanta Gas Light near Brunswick, Ga.; and Jacksonville Electric Authority's new Brandy Branch generating plant near Jacksonville, Fla.
If approval is granted, construction should begin in third quarter 2002 and should be in-service June 1, 2003.
"Cypress provides needed infrastructure for continued economic development and growth in southern Georgia and northern Florida," said Jim Yardley, president of Southern Natural Gas Co. "Demand is increasing for natural gas-fired power generation in this region, and the proximity of the Elba Island LNG facility enables us to serve this demand cost-effectively."
