HOUSTON, Apr. 4Statoil has awarded Halliburton Co. a contract worth 250 million Norwegian kroner ($27.53 million) to strengthen the weak points in the welded joints in pipe connections on Åsgard field in the Norwegian Sea.

The contract was awarded under an existing frame agreement for marine operations.

Weaknesses were discovered in about 72 pipe connections on the seabed when the Smørbukk structure was being prepared for production last autumn (OGJ Online, Feb. 9, 2001). The pipe connects the Midgard and Smørbukk reservoirs with the production installations.

Repairs will involve the use of remote-controlled subsea equipment. Work is slated to start May 1 with completion expected later this year.

Ola Krumsvik, head of production for Åsgard, said work would not impact the contractual gas deliveries because production from the Midgard reservoir can be maintained while repairs are done on Smørbukk.

The repairs on Midgard will be done during the second half of May. At that time, contracted gas volumes will be supplied with help from other fields.
