HOUSTON, Apr. 25 -- BP PLC has a deepwater oil discovery on Green Canyon Block 243 in the Gulf of Mexico.

It said a well on the Aspen prospect, in 3,150 ft of water 5 km from its Troika field, found 490 net ft of pay. Other infrastructure exists in the area, too.

BP acquired the block containing Aspen in its purchase of the former Vastar Resources Inc. in 2000. BP is evaluating about 50 Vastar prospects.

BP operates Aspen with 80%, and Nexen Petroleum Offshore USA Inc. owns the rest. Nexen is a subsidiary of Nexen Inc., Calgary. The partners are considering development options.
