KARACHI, Mar. 14
A joint venture operated by BHP Petroleum Pty Ltd. announced Zamzama gas field was brought on stream less than a year from the signing of a gas sales contract and less than 3 years from discovery.

Other joint venture partners are Premier Oil PLC, Lasmo PLC, and the government of Pakistan's holdings (OGJ Online, Oct. 11, 2000).

Zamzama field was discovered in April 1998 on the Dadu concession between the towns of Dadu and Johi in Sindh Province.

Two wells drilled on the structure have tested at rates in excess of 90 MMscfd, which is believed to be record flow for gas wells in Pakistan.

Zamzama field will produce 70 MMscfd initially with development plans calling for production of more than 400 MMscfd, which will add about 20% to Pakistan's gas supply.

When fully developed, the field will supply gas for power generation, backing out oil imports totaling $300 million/year.
