HOUSTON, Mar. 13
Esenjay Exploration Inc. said Tuesday it has a gas discovery in the deep Wilcox trend of Goliad County, Tex.

The Pereira Children's Trust No. 2, drilled on Esenjay's 25 sq mile Hordes Creek 3D seismic project, flowed at an unstimulated rate of 17.6 MMcfd with flowing tubing pressure of 7,002 psi through a 22/64-in. choke. After shutting the well in for 3 hr, tubing pressure reached 9,565 psi.

The wildcat was drilled to 13,505 ft TD and encountered 95 ft of net pay in two Middle Wilcox sands. The Judy sand, the lower of the two, had 70 ft of net pay and was perforated and tested. The Betty sand had 25 ft of net pay and was behind pipe. Esenjay said it would complete, test and commingle the Betty sand with the Judy sand.

The well was turned to pipeline sales on Mar. 8 and will produce 2 MMcfd until a gas treatment facility is completed in 10 weeks.

Esenjay planned to drill a delineation well 1,700 ft from the No. 2 and later drill a hole to test sands at 14,500 ft that were not penetrated in the No. 2 but were present in a down dip well another operator drilled in 1984. Esenjay said four to eight wells may be required to develop the field.

It said the discovery was drilled on a faulted anticline that 3D seismic indicates could cover 1,000 acres. It said the geologic structure is the deeper expression of a non- geopressured Upper Wilcox field that has produced 115 bcf from depths shallower than 10,000 ft.

Esenjay generated the Hordes Creek 3D seismic project and is the operator of the No. 2 well, in which it owned a 28.5% working interest. Ocean Energy Inc. had 30%, Stephens Production Co. 15%, and other firms hold the balance.
