Conoco Inc. and partners have completed a stepout they said significantly extends the Rang Dong field on Block 15-2 off Viet Nam.

The well tested 8,500 b/d from one zone.

The field is 120 miles southwest of Ho Chi Minh City in the Cuu Long Basin in 165 ft of water. The 400,000 block is near Bach Ho and Ruby fields.

Rob McKee, Conoco executive vice-president of exploration and production, said, "This is the first well drilled to test the boundaries of the field since Conoco farmed into Block 12 in February this year. It confirms our belief that there are many excellent prospects in the area."

Conoco said Rang Dong production recently increased to 50,000 b/d with the completion of a development well that added 11,000 b/d.

It has increased its interest in Block 15-2 from 30% to 36%. Other partners are Japanese Viet Nam Petroleum Co. with 46.5% and PetroViet Nam with 17.5%.

Conoco holds interests in five blocks off Viet Nam. They total 5.75 million acres.
