Enbridge Inc., Calgary, says it will proceed with the second phase of a $120 million (Can.) project to expand its main crude oil pipeline system in western Canada.

The 76-mile project will add capacity of 40,000 b/d to the line between Enbridge oil terminals at Hardisty, Alta., and Kerrobert, Sask., and increase total line capacity to 1.84 million b/d.

The company expects to file a regulatory application with Canadas National Energy Board in November. Subject to NEB approval, construction would begin in the summer or fall of 2001 with completion in the first half of 2002.

Enbridge made the decision to proceed after completing an agreement with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. The company said the expansion reflects a positive outlook for the growth of western Canada production, particularly for heavy oil and synthetic oil.
