Sunoco Inc., Philadelphia, Pa., plans to begin routine maintenance Friday on a 93,000 b/d fluid catalytic cracking unit at its Marcus Hook refinery.

Sunoco's Marcus Hook and Philadelphia refineries make up Sunoco's 500,000 b/d capacity Delaware Valley refinery complex. Other associated processing units at Marcus Hook, including the gas plant, the alkylation unit, and an 85,000 b/d crude unit, will also be shut down for scheduled maintenance, which is expected to take 4 weeks. The facility's remaining 90,000 b/d crude unit will be unaffected by the turnaround.

Sunoco said it expects to complete repair and turnaround work on the 140,000 b/d crude unit at its Philadelphia complex this week. The crude unit, which consists of 50,000 b/d and 90,000 b/d sections, caught fire Sept. 7. The previously scheduled turnaround of the 50,000 b/d area of the crude unit has been accelerated.

Sunoco expects to return the 90,000 b/d section to operation by the end of this month but will begin a planned 4-week maintenance turnaround in late October. The Philadelphia refinery's 200,000 b/d crude unit is operating normally.
