Duke Energy International, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corp., Charlotte, NC, announced Wednesday that it has finished building the $297 million Eastern Gas Pipeline in Australia. The pipeline runs from Longford, Victoria, to Sydney.
Duke says the pipeline brings natural gas market competition to Australia for the first time.
Among other commitments, the 495-mile natural gas pipeline will supply gas to fuel the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The company also has other agreements in place for the pipeline's capacity.
"Completion of Eastern Gas Pipeline will provide a reliable energy supply and help spur industrial growth through creation of a more competitive environment in the Australian energy industry,'' said Bruce Williamson, president and chief executive of DEI.
Eastern Gas Pipeline will have an initial capacity of 173 MMcfd to deliver gas to regional and metropolitan centers in the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria.
