Qatar will supply natural gas from its supergiant North field to Kuwait, Qatari Minister of Energy and Industry Abdullah bin Hamad al Attiyah said in Doha May 3. The gas will come from the enhanced gas utilization (EGU) project Qatar General Petroleum Corp. and ExxonMobil Corp. plan to set up to further exploit North field gas reserves.

The multibillion-dollar project will produce 1.75 bcf/d of gas from North field. A relevant agreement was signed on Tuesday (see story in Top Stories section).

The project entails building a pipeline that will transport gas for domestic use and for export to other regional states. About 500 Mcfd of gas will be consumed locally and the rest exported.

Al Attiyah said Qatar's gas supplies to Kuwait would help meet growing energy needs there. He said Qatar and Kuwait would need to set up a joint team to work out details of the agreement, including volumes, prices, and transport arrangements.

A memorandum of understanding would be signed within 3 months, Al Attiyah noted, adding that the agreement would enhance Qatar's position as a leading gas exporter in the gulf region.

Official estimates put Qatar's natural gas reserves at more than 380 tcf, which would rank it third, after Russia and Iran.
