Clark Refining & Marketing Inc. of St. Louis announced that it has awarded a long-term contract to Reliant Eenrgy Inc.'s retail arm to supply as much as 43.8 bcf/year of natural gas to Clark's Port Arthur, Tex., refining complex.

The Reliant Energy Retail Group began providing on Mar. 1 supplies of gas to the Clark complex at an initial rate of more than 21.9 bcf/year. Supplies will increase to a rate of nearly 43.8 bcf/year in 2001 after the planned hydrogen plant at the complex is completed, said Phil Vance, director of industrial gas sales for the major accounts gas group.

The company isn't disclosing the length of the contract or its value but a Reliant official said it's the largest deal Reliant has done so far, in terms of volumes delivered.

The complex will receive gas via multiple pipelines in the Port Arthur area to increase reliability and cost-effectiveness. Details about the complex and the planned hydrogen plant aren't available, the official added.

An unregulated arm of Reliant Energy, the Reliant Energy Retail Group provides a wide range of natural gas, electricity, and energy services to business and residential customers in deregulated energy markets.
