Spinnaker Exploration Co., Houston, has made a natural gas discovery in the Gulf of Mexico off Texas.

High Island A-7 No. 2 well was drilled to a measured depth of 14,475 ft and found three productive Miocene Robulus L sands containing 63 ft of net gas pay. Rob L-5 sand contains most of the net pay, says Spinnaker, operator of the block.

Spinnaker expects 20 MMcfd of gas production from the well. Another appraisal well is planned for the third or fourth quarter.

A-7 No. 2 has been cased for production, and completion operations are proceeding. A platform is planned for the well. First production from High Island A-7 block is expected in the third quarter. Gas from HI A-7 and HI 202 Blocks (Spinnaker, 75%, and Vastar Resources Inc., 25%) will be processed through facilities on High Island Block 199.

High Island A-7 covers 5,760 acres in 40 ft of water, about 43 miles from Galveston. Spinnaker holds a 53.44% working interest and 44% net revenue interest. Other partners in the block are Vastar, 17.81% working interest; Forcenergy, Inc., 10%; Fidelity Oil Holdings Inc., 12.50%; and Black Hills Exploration & Production Inc., 6.25%. Blue Dolphin Energy owns an after-prospect-payout working interest.
